RRSP Contributions Not Claimed
I didn't record my RRSP contributions on my previous year's tax return. What do I do?
If you made an RRSP contribution for a previous tax year (2006, for example), but didn't record this on your return (perhaps because you were not going to utilize the deduction in the year), what you do depends on when you made the contribution.
If the contribution was actually made in the first 2 months of 2007, it is okay to put this on Schedule 7 of your 2007 tax return, as a contribution made in the period March 2, 2007 to December 31, 2007.
If the contribution was actually made in 2006, then you should file a form T1Adj (this can be done online - see the article on changing your return) for the 2006 taxation year. You then have 2 options regarding your 2007 tax return:
1. Wait for the reassessment notice for your 2006 tax year before filing your 2007 tax return (as long as you can still file for 2007 before April 30th), including the 2006 contribution as a carry-forward from 2006, or
2. File your 2006 tax return without the carry-forward from 2006, and subsequently file a form T1Adj (as above, can be done online) requesting a change to your 2007 tax return to include the carried-forward contribution from 2006, and to claim the RRSP deduction.
